It’s said that pictures speak a thousand words and as such twice per month (on a Friday) ExpatOnTheGo will feature photos from an amateur photographer. Today’s Photo Friday post will highlight the work of Pam Maloughney Jetten who is a Canadian expatriate here in Jakarta who calls me ‘love bug’. When I asked her to send me a couple of lines about herself this is what she had to say, “I was born addicted to Chocolate Milk and I have itchy feet. Both have taken me around the world and gotten me into a mess of adventures!!!”
One of the things you learn early on arrival here in Jakarta is that mopeds are a major part of the transportation system. Approximately 60% of all motor vehicles are mopeds. The city is highly congested and taking 30 minutes to drive 5 miles is not unheard of in this traffic haven. It is also not unforeseeable that when it rains and the traffic is truly jammed, you can step out of your car, grab a pedicure and be sure that your driver may have only moved a few feet while you were away. In addition to being an easy way for locals and a few brave expatriates to get around, motorbikes serve as the beasts of burden in this city. I am still amazed to see a husband, wife and 2 or 3 kids riding on one moped….no, the mopeds here are not any bigger in size than the ones you know. Not only can the person riding on the back of the bike be seen chatting away on their phone while the bike is travelling along, but mothers can be seen breastfeeding or tending to other needs of their children. Another post in the future will show you the proper Jakartian way to ride on a motorbike but today Pam will share some of her favourite shots of mopeds riding in the city.
